Points In Time Saga #1: The Time Machine - Ignition

The Time Machine - Ignition
"Are you ready to embark on this journey?" asked the voices that I referred to as "They".
I nodded without turning my head while I stood still in front of a machine that looked like a tunnel inside of other tunnels with lights around it. It seemed to be off at the moment.
The phrase "Primary ignition activated" echoed throughout the round chamber where I was.

"How did you manage to create this?" I asked full of curiosity.
"We developed the technology but it was your people that laid the groundwork for the physics of it. You thought that it was just a theoretical possibility but you just were limited by the technology of your time" said They.
By now I was somewhat used to the sound of the 5 voices that spoke in unison whenever I made contact.
They sounded as a mixture of men and women; the voices sounded in different ages and accents that changed every time something was said.

It was complicated to process because of the echo sound they made. It was reverberating and shocking at the same time but I was managing somehow.
I was standing on what seemed to be a black rubber pad but it was keeping me locked in place; I couldn't move away from it.
The machine was activated in such a way that it seemed like it was waking up from a slumber. It just came to life. I'm sorry, I just don't know how else to explain it.
There was an intense glow coming from it. The bright red centre seemed to be hottest part. It was surrounded by yellow dots that flashed on an off in irregular intervals.
A steady humming sound was being emanated; it echoed back and forth on the wall and floor of the black chamber. Half of the area was full of black spikes that resembled an anechoic room and the other half was completely flat, covered in a mirror finish that reflected everything.
The sound resembled a high voltage power line but higher pitched. There was no other light in sight but the one being produced by the machine.

The heat I felt was like if I stood just a step away from an active furnace; it was intense but it didn't burn me. It did make me sweat like if I was locked inside a sauna, though.
"Is it normal this much heat?" I asked while wiping some sweat off my forehead before it got to my eyes.
"The effect is considered in what your people called the First Law of Thermodynamics. The energy required by this machine will be the same the process will need. Exploring time is an expensive endeavour in more senses that you can imagine" said They as the humming sound increased in pitch and the yellow lights began flashing quickly.
The red rings around the centre were spinning at a high velocity. The heat output increased and it was starting to become unbearable.
"Have you done this before?" I yelled trying to overcome the humming that kept increasing in volume and was pulsing now.
"We are proficient in this process. The concept of time exploration your people had is different and limited to what the process actually allows. You just couldn't fathom the possibilities because you dealt more with unproven theories rather than confirmed realities" They replied in its characteristic expressionless tone.

"It's time now. You may proceed. Good luck" I was told as the red glowing rings locked in place, the yellow lights stopped flickering and now they were constantly lit. The centre opened like it was allowing me to come inside of it.
The black mat released its grip on my feet and allowed me to move.
The heat disappeared, now it felt... numbingly cold.
I was confused, then...
Total darkness.
